The Holidays and Looking Ahead

How was everyone’s Christmas? Were there any golf clubs or accessories under your tree? Did you give or get a Renegar Wedge? It’s a bit cool across the U.S. right now, so even if you did you might not have the opportunity to try it out for a few days!

Around here we are dreaming of warmer clients and swinging our clubs, but even more on our minds is the PGA Show that takes place at the end of January. We are excited to show off what we have been working on for our customers.  If you are planning on attending the show, make sure you stop by and see the super booth we will be a part of with Performance Sports Marketing. We are also looking forward to seeing what everyone else is unveiling in Orlando. It’s an exciting time of year for the golf industry, stay tuned for more info about the show from us!

We also wanted to take a minute to wish you a very happy remainder of the holiday season.  The time between Christmas and New Year’s is special, the world seems to run at a slower pace. Take time to enjoy it.

Tips on Traveling with Golf Clubs

I have done a lot of traveling with my clubs. It’s Christmas time and many people will head out to visit family and many will take a few days to just to do something fun.  I wanted to pass on tips on how to travel with your clubs, especially if you are going to be flying.

First and foremost get a good travel bag cover, Club Glove and Sun Mountain

Pic of Travel bags

An example of travel luggage from Club Glove. Photo from www.clubglove.com

are both good brands. It is no surprise that the airlines just don’t care about your clubs the way you do. So do everything you can to protect your clubs.  A travel bag with wheels on it makes getting around the airport and out to the pick-up area or the rental car desk so much easier. Remember you probably have other luggage to lug around too!

Keep in mind the hard case travel containers offer more protection, but occasionally they don’t fit into rental cars,  keep that in mind when choosing the size of rental car you get. The Economy is probably not going to work!
Another option is shipping your clubs, while I have never done this,  it may be a convenient and easy option for you.  FedEx has detailed information and rates on their website to assist you in shipping you clubs.
I hope this helps you have a great vacation. Make you sure protect your Renegar Wedges.

Bob Renegar Talks Anchored Putters

Bob Renegar talks Anchored Putters

Bob Renegar Talks Anchored Putters

With all the talk surrounding the upcoming vote on anchored putters by USGA, I wanted to share by thoughts on the matter.  Anchored putters whether LONG putters or BELLY putters (they are a little different) accomplish the same purpose. I have used a belly putter myself for probably more than 8 years – I have considerable experience with this technique and in experimenting with these designs – they do make a difference.

The new rule comes after a long time and significant deliberation by the governing bodies, but it is now being driven by the putters success on the PGA Tour by younger players and its widespread usage.

The first wins I remember, using one of these putters, were by Jim Ferree and Orville Moody in senior golf in the late 80’s. The USGA thought about it then, but they were ultimately handed a political “hot potato”, as the PGA Tour was trying at that same time to popularize senior Tour golf, and the USGA just chose  to not broach the topic. I was leading Palmer R&D at the time and I talked people with the USGA about doing something.

The long putters and belly putters absolutely mitigates the problem of right hand dominance/release through impact that tends to complicate speed/distance control, which is essential on any breaking putt. It also impacts direction control/consistency to a lesser degree.

These putters certainly takes the “yips” away (flipping the club head/releasing through impact with the right hand) which destroys distance control.

Many in the equipment community are clamoring for “statistical evidence” that there is a scoring advantage to anchored putters. It is possible that the increased difficulties associated with “lag” putting might offset the certain advantages of the anti-yip no-release aspect of this design/putting technique, but it is more likely there is a real scoring advantage – particularly inside 10 feet and with straighter putts.

Interestingly, there are many younger/newer players who have never putted any other way which will cause a real adjustment for some of us

Noteworthy also here, is the continued cooperation between the USGA and R&A, which was not always the case – good to see them working together and on the same page.

I just wish they would roll back the “overall distance standard” on golf balls by about 10% – it is very doable. It would restore many great old golf courses to their original glory. Courses have been made obsolete with the distance gains of the last 20 years.  That would make a bigger difference than practically anything else they could do.

Bottom line – protecting the integrity of the game is the charter of the USGA, and they are doing that here in the case of anchored putters.

Making A List and Checking It Twice

Gifts for Golfers on your Christmas List

Gift ideas for golfers on your Christmas list

It is most certainly that time of year. Some ideas come easier than others when you are shopping for those on your Christmas list.  A Groupon that showed up in my inbox today started me thinking about presents for the golfers on my list.  Of course if a golfer  on your list doesn’t have a Renegar Wedge, NOW is the perfect time to get them one!

After you buy them a new wedge, maybe you would want to add a little more to it. What about a gift card to the course they have wanted to play all year? Lessons for someone who has always wanted to play is a great idea. Or if you are also a golfer, plan a golf weekend for both of you? There are great golf accessories on the market too. The Garmin Approach S1 Watch is one of the easiest GPS devices to use on the golf course. And really, who couldn’t use a new bag?

Buying for a golfer is easier than you think. There are many options to choose from and you can’t go wrong!

On Friday check back on the blog to read Bob’s thoughts on the anchoring ban discussions.

Renegar Wedges and the Champions Tour

Mike Nickell, Bob Renegar, Fuzzy Zoeller, Danny Lynn at the SAS Championship

Last week was one of those weeks that make being  in this industry so enjoyable. We had the opportunity to visit our Champions Tour rep in Cary, NC for the SAS Championship at the Prestonwood Country Club. It is great getting out and talking to the legends and hearing what they really think about the the Renegar Wedge and golf in general.

Most of these guys play for the love of the game, not to pay the mortgage. They have paid their dues and been a part of the industry for years. They can usually say how they really feel and not jeopardize agreements with existing sponsors.

Our clubs are in the hands of multiple guys on the Champions Tour. The talk in the locker room and around the course was really positive about the Renegar Wedge. Lots of guys had the opportunity to hit the club and tell us what they thought. Keep your eyes open if you happen to catch an event on TV, you may just catch a glimpse of  the Renegar Wedges.  There are several tournaments left on the Champions Tour in 2012. This week they are still in NC, but have moved over to Conover for the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn.

It was also fantastic to have a chance to chat with Fuzzy Zoeller and hear what he has been up to. He has always been an interesting and fun guy to talk to. The picture above is a quick snapshot we took before walking on to watch more of the practice rounds.

It was a great trip and we are looking forward to our next. It really is one of the highlights of doing this work!

It Time for the Playoffs to Begin!

The Barclays at Bethpage State Park

The Barclays at Bethpage State Park

The Barclays are this weekend. It is the first in four tournaments which are part of the FedEx Cup Playoffs that run through September 30. The other tournements are Deutsche Bank Championship, BMW Championship and the  Tour Championship by Coca Cola. Are the rules of the Playoffs and how the winner is crowned still a little fuzzy? Check out the PGA Tour website to give yourself a refresher. There are several pages you can get to from that link that will also give you all the details.

The Barclays are being held on The Black Course at Bathpage State Park. It is a gorgeous location in Farmingdale, NY. The course has previously hosted two U.S. Opens in 2002 and 2009. At the end of day 1 Padraig Harrington is in the lead by 1, check out the full leaderboard to see where your favorite players are in field.

What are your golf plans for the weekend? Why don’t you come up with your own playoff with your golf buddies? Four weeks, play a different course each week,  save the score cards and see who does the best over the next month. Who will claim the title? Make it an annual event, give the winner a trophy or buy the winner lunch, just have a good time. And let’s just say you are the only one playing a Renegar Rx12 wedge currently and YOU WIN. That will give you even more bragging rights and everyone will be fighting for a chance to try your wedge.

Go ahead do your own playoffs then leave us a comment, we would love to showcase you and your golf buddies on the Renegar blog.

PGA Championship at Kiawah Island Golf Resort

18th hole The Ocean Course

There are some beautiful places to golf in our great country and when golfers make a list of those places The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, SC  certainly makes the cut. The course just ranked 25th in Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest U.S. Golf Courses List and 4th on Best Public Course List. Next week The Ocean Course will become only the fourth course to host both the Sr. PGA Championship (’07) and the PGA Championship. It has a long pedigree of who’s who when it comes to players and tournaments that have experienced this demanding course.  With unobstructed views, this oceanfront course leaves golfers at the mercy of mother nature and her winds.

Have you visited Kiawah Island, SC? It is a true retreat that graciously welcomes you to relax in luxury. Although, I seriously doubt the players will be relaxing much. There are four other golf course in the resort in addition to The Ocean Course; they include Turtle Point Golf Course, Osprey Point Golf Course, Oak Point Golf Course and Cougar Point Golf Course. Accommodations range from an award-winning hotel, The Sanctuary, to private rentals. Do you have some vacation days you need to use? How about one last trip before summer slips through your fingertips? You won’t regret coming to watch the PGA Championship. You may even be able have dinner two tables away from one of your favorite golfers. It’s a small community. Bring your clubs and Renegar Wedge and play one of great courses on the island or one of the other great courses in the Charleston area, you are less than an hour away from downtown Charleston!

If you can’t make it to enjoy the tournament in person, don’t miss it on TV next week. Practice rounds begin on Monday, August 6 and competition begins August 9. Watch the best players  try to out play one another and mother nature. We can hardly wait to see who takes the title.
